The
prom dress. It is perhaps the single most important piece of clothing a girl
will wear before her wedding dress or some fabulous New Year’s Eve shoes. Yes,
there’s the cotillion dress and yes, there’s the homecoming dress and first
communion dress, but the prom dress is far more important for a lot of reasons.
It is, for most of us women, the first formal dress we were able to pick out to
wear for ourselves. It is our first opportunity to make a fashion statement as
young women in a formal setting. It is our first moment to look fabulous in a
young adult spotlight.
We all
remember our prom dresses. From the simple black, knee-length cocktail dress
with the plunging neckline, to the gaudy, frilly peach monstrosity we thought
was hot (think Pia Zadora), to something in between, we remember. We remember
because we would have done anything, paid anything, worked just about anywhere
to make the dress a reality for us.
Today,
many young women really are paying just about anything for their prom dresses.
In my shopping for a prom dress this week, I found that the average prom dress
costs somewhere in the neighborhood of $1,200. That’s too much moolah even for
a grown woman with some means to pay for a special occasion dress. So in the
spirit of prom season, and more importantly, in the spirit of finding good
deals, I have found some dresses for prom that are under $100 and will look
delicious on every figure:
